Apprentice Farm Technician

Due to developments in the area, we are recruiting for motivated and hardworking Apprentice Farm Technicians to join Mowi. Our apprentices will be based out of our seawater farm base in Carradale.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in aquaculture to gain hands-on experience and develop technical skills in a dynamic and growing industry. They will work closely with experienced farm technicians and managers to ensure the health, welfare, and optimal growth of farmed salmon while maintaining high environmental and biosecurity standards. During the apprenticeship the successful candidates will be expected to travel to different locations within the Company for short blocks of time.

The successful candidates will work towards gaining their Aquaculture NPA (Level 4) and their Modern Apprenticeship in Aquaculture (SVQ Level 2). There will also be opportunities to progress to SVQ Level 3 & 4.

About the job

The farm technician role is a crucial part of the operations process and ensures that the best management of our salmon is undertaken. We need our technicians to strive for continuous improvement and deliver on all aspects of farm work to keep the team on track and performing well. The job includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assist with daily feeding and monitoring of salmon stock.
  • Conduct routine inspections to assess fish health and behaviour, reporting any abnormalities.
  • Identification and reporting of sea lice levels.
  • Maintain and operate farm equipment, including nets, pens, boats, and feeding systems.
  • Support routine operations on the farm including delicing operations, gill treatments, harvesting and grading processes, utilising the company’s fleet of wellboats and farm support vessels.
  • Undertake daily environmental checks.
  • Assist in implementing biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Participate in site maintenance and general farm upkeep, ensuring a clean and safe working environment.
  • Willingness to learn and utilise digital tools for data recording, monitoring systems, and farm management applications.

Ideal candidate

The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about sustainable aquaculture and eager to develop a rewarding career in salmon farming.

  • No previous qualifications or experience is required as full training will be provided
  • You will be required to hold, or able to obtain, and retain an ML5 or ENG1 medical certificate
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Flexible approach to meeting the demands of the job.
  • Able to work safely and effectively in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with and adapt to upcoming technologies and software.
  • Ability to understand the aims of the site and to support the rest of the team to achieve these
  • Respect for the need for safe working practices
