Event Moderator — AFK Cafe

AFK Cafe is seeking Event Moderators—community stewards who help host, guide, and support live experiences that make the cafe feel lively, welcoming, and genuinely engaging.

This is a visible, relational authority role. Event Moderators are active participants in the community, not behind-the-scenes enforcers. Presence matters here: engaging in chat, being on mic when appropriate, and helping people feel oriented and included.

If you enjoy hosting, facilitating, or simply being part of the energy of a room, you’ll likely feel at home.

How We Work Together

Moderators at AFK Cafe operate as a collaborative team with shared context, shared systems, and shared responsibility. While roles have different focuses, we do not work in silos.

You don’t need to be best friends with everyone—but you do need to be communicative, reliable, and aligned. Community-building here is relational, not performative. We value warmth, emotional awareness, and a sense of humor alongside responsibility.

I am a community-oriented admin and welcome growth. If you have ideas for events, formats, or experiences you would like to develop, you are encouraged to share them. Creativity is actively supported, with coordination and approval used to ensure alignment, pacing, and sustainability.

After acceptance, moderators complete a personality and work-style assessment to support team flow, communication, and burnout prevention. This is a support tool, not an evaluation.

We are a team. We support one another. Perfection is not required.

Types of Events You May Support

  • Game nights and casual play
  • Tabletop sessions and one-shots
  • Anime, movie, and watch parties
  • Creative sessions (art, writing, co-working)
  • Cozy or low-energy hangouts
  • Community discussions or themed events

Moderators are encouraged to bring their own event ideas. All new events require coordination and approval before scheduling.

What Event Moderators Do

  • Host or co-host live events
  • Welcome participants and set expectations
  • Guide pacing and flow
  • Support accessibility and emotional safety
  • Uphold community guidelines during events
  • Coordinate preparation and follow-up

This role focuses on facilitation and care, not control.

Presence Requirement

If you do not want to engage socially, participate live in chat, or be on mic when needed, this role is not a fit.

Authority at AFK Cafe is visible and relational.

Commitment Details

Event-based volunteer role with scheduled live participation. Weekly check-ins are expected during active periods. Reliability and communication are essential.

Communication & Coordination

Slack is used for internal communication, coordination, and shared logs. Participation is required.

Professional Development

Moderators in good standing may request a professional reference verifying leadership, reliability, and community moderation experience, based on observed role performance.

Culture Fit

AFK Cafe values curiosity, warmth, humor, and people who enjoy being part of a living, creative community. We take care of our space—and we also laugh, play games, and do not believe seriousness requires stiffness.

If you care about people and enjoy showing up as a full human (memes included), you will probably feel at home here.
