Job Description Summary

The mission and purpose of this team is Integrating product design and manufacturing excellence using engineering principles and mathematics to deliver life-saving products worldwide.

This role will work on the development of superior products and efficient processes through rigorous execution of DFMA enabling high impact innovation and sustainable growth. This role will assume technical leadership of projects and champion technical excellence in product assembly. This role will engage with a global team responsible for ensuring the manufacturability of new Specimen Management Business Unit products. This candidate will have a passion for developing robust, well thought-out medical device assembly equipment/processes that optimize for business success through production of high-quality products with best-in-class OEE processes.

This technical leader is a partner with R&D and Operations Assembly Equipment Design Team for new product introductions with a view to launching advanced manufacturing processes & automation while meeting the needs and timelines for customer focus.

Responsibilities:

  • The GIE Product & Process Design Staff Engineer will define manufacturing technology strategy for new products (NPD) and product design changes, influence product design through design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) analysis and enable successful industrialization (internal or external) and transfer to the Specimen Management Business Unit factories.  

  • Responsible to work with R&D & GIE across the Specimen Management Business Unit on the product design and assembly development for current and new products including proof of concept (POC) and feasibility testing support.  

  • Perform DFMA (Design For Manufacturing and Assembly), DFSS (Design For Six Sigma) analysis, and CAD-based Assembly Tolerance Requirement (ATR) analysis.

  • Establish assembly requirements KPIVs and KPOVs to ensure product quality, cost and cycle time and implement process controls to ensure product quality and consistency.  

  • Create the process/training for effective DFMA reviews and phase gates. 

  • Ensure the assembly process in Specimen Management GIE is understood well to minimize risk. 

  • Develop and execute assembly risk mitigation plans and pFMEA analysis.

  • Set assembly development standards and practices for the Product and Process Design GIE team. Guide and mentor Product and Process Design GIE team. ​

  • Capture the opportunities for existing assembly processes and identify areas for improvement and inclusion into future DFMA.   

  • Design new assembly processes that are efficient, within the targeted OEE, CapEx & COGS, and scalable for Vertical Start Up. 

  • Provide intellectual property for technical assembly solutions and product designs for assembly to secure competitive advantage to the business.

  • Subject matter expert in DFMA, engineering, and process for assembly.

  • Review and revise detailed CAD models of product designs, ensuring accuracy/adherence to specifications, standards, manufacturing requirements 

  • Present complex data in a clear and concise manner to all levels of the organization.

  • Provide experience in cross-functional collaboration and leadership skills Support operations during a production crisis including problems solving tools and root cause analysis (RCA) (quality, supplier, BO etc.)​ Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures including RCRA Hazardous Waste regulations.

  • Comply with all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Stakeholder Interactions:

  • Product Design, GIE, and R+D Leadership: to ensure product is designed to enable a mfg. process which can produce product efficiently (target COGS) and to required quality standards. 

  • Equipment Design Team: to ensure equipment team implements process requirements for successful industrialization

  • Production Management: to ensure that mfg. process is optimized for production effectiveness (OEE) and full-scale COGS/GP% will be achieved

  • Quality Team: to ensure that mfg. process is designed to meet required Q standards, and that Q issues during prod. are quickly identified/resolved

  • Supply Chain Team: to ensure that mfg. process is optimized for timely material delivery

  • Program Management: to ensure that project meets specified requirements that equipment is delivered on time within budget.

Minimum Education:   

  • B.S.: 10+ years of experience in advanced manufacturing engineering, product design, and/or technical leadership level in Medical Device or other highly regulated industries.

  • M.S.: 8+ years of experience in advanced manufacturing engineering, product design, and/or technical leadership level in Medical Device or other highly regulated industries.

Minimum Experience:

  • Broad-based business experience in high performance multi-national enterprise

  • Demonstrated experience leading/deploying Advanced Assembly initiatives and coaching at site/functional level.

  • Capable of coaching others in the application of this competency by translating complex nuances relating to this competency into easy to understand terms.
