About the position

The primary role is responsible for interpreting data, determining requirements, executing detailed engineering design, and providing technical support during construction, commissioning, and initial operation of medium complexity capital investment projects addressing water and wastewater treatment, pumping, and conveyance facilities. The position involves supervising internal technical resources and external consulting firms on assigned projects, serving as a technical expert in water and wastewater facility engineering, and contributing to the development of technical standards, specifications, policies, and procedures. The role also includes maintaining industry contacts and providing consultancy and project-level support to enhance operational excellence within American Water.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct evaluations and inspections of water and wastewater facilities to identify necessary capital improvements.
  • Develop design concepts for new or expansion/renovation of existing treatment facilities.
  • Prepare or manage the preparation of technical, permitting, bidding, and contractual documents for capital investment projects.
  • Oversee scope and quality of work to meet design concepts and Company standards.
  • Serve as a technical resource during construction, commissioning, and initial operation of assets.
  • Develop proficiency in technical design, maintenance, asset management, and operations.
  • Contribute to the development of Engineering Standards and specifications.
  • Participate in special assignments including professional conferences and technology research.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 4+ years' experience in water resources engineering and/or planning; advanced degrees may substitute for experience.
  • Experience with local site plan approval and state environmental permitting processes is preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering design theory and practice.
  • Familiarity with project management, water resources, and utility maintenance and operations.
  • Knowledge of current technology and trends in water quality and treatment.
