The role:

As a Staff Accountant at Newsela, you will play a key role within the accounting organization. Contributing to Newsela’s month end close, financial reporting, internal controls process, and continued growth of our accounting operations. You will support accounting initiatives from start to finish, playing a hands-on role in areas such as accounts payable, accruals, fixed assets, software capitalization, and financial reporting. Your work will have an immediate impact, helping to strengthen and streamline our general accounting processes.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Responsible for bank reconciliations, accounts payable processing and 1099 reporting.
  • Maintain expense reporting software, review expense reports, and assist in administering the credit card program.
  • Responsible for the accounting and reporting of fixed assets.
  • Preparation of monthly reconciliations and analysis of all balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing tasks including journal entries, the preparation of work papers and other supporting documents.
  • Assist with the building out of internal controls by preparing process documents an identifying process improvements.
  • Assist with other ad hoc projects, and supporting the Finance and Payroll & Benefits
    functions as necessary.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or closely related field required
  • Experience in Big Four public accounting/audit preferred
  • At least two years of accounting related experience required

  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Excel is required
  • Familiarity with NetSuite or other general ledger systems as well as other accounting software systems such as Concur, Bill.com, Ramp
  • Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Compensation: 

Base compensation: $60,000 - $69,000. Total compensation for this role also includes incentive stock options and benefits. This compensation range may be adjusted based on actual experience.
